               DMIT means Dermatoglyphics Multiple Intelligence Test. From ancient Greek Derma= Skin and Glyph= Ridges/Print. The former USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republic) was using Dermatoglyphics as one of the methods to select candidates for Olympic Games since the 1970s. As it turned out, the USSR took home 50 gold medals in 1972 and 125 gold medals in 1976.

What is Multiple Intelligence?

     Everyone is unique and has a basic 8 types of intelligence but each person manifests varying levels of separate bits of intelligence. It is important to note that, within the theory, every person possesses all intelligence to some degree.

The theory of Multiple Intelligence was proposed by Dr.Howard Gardner in his book “Frame of Mind” in1983. Dr.Howard Gardner is a renowned scientist, psychologist & educationist, was the Hobb Professor of cognition and education at the Howard Graduate school of Education and senior director of Harvard Project Zero.

Howard Gardner initially formulated a list of seven intelligence that is Linguistic Intelligence,Logical-Mathematical Intelligence, Musical Intelligence, Bodily Kinesthetic Intelligence, Visual-Spatial Intelligence, Interpersonal Intelligence and Intrapersonal Intelligence.

Linguistic Intelligence: It involves sensitivity to spoken and written language,the ability to learn languages, and the capacity to use language to accomplish certain goals. This intelligence includes the ability to effectively use language to express oneself rhetorically or poetically; and language as a means to remember information. Writers, Poets, Lawyers and Speakers are among those that Howard Gardner sees as having high linguistic intelligence.

Logical-Mathematical Intelligence: It consists of the capacity to analyze problems logically, carry out mathematical operations, and investigate issues scientifically. In Howard Gardner’s words, it entails the ability to detect patterns, reason deductively and think logically. This intelligence is most often associated with scientific and mathematical thinking.

Musical Intelligence: It involves skill in the performance, composition, and appreciation of musical patterns. It encompasses the capacity to recognize and compose musical pitches,tones and rhythms. According to Howard Gardner musical intelligence runs in an almost structural parallel to linguistic intelligence.

Bodily Kinesthetic Intelligence: This entails the potential of using one’s whole body or parts of the body to solve problems. It is the ability to use mental abilities to coordinate bodily movements. Howard Gardner sees mental and physical activity as related.

Visual-Spatial Intelligence: This intelligence is the ability to deal with space and distance.The way a sailor or airplane pilot navigates the large spatial world. This ability is used by chess players, sculptors, architects, designers, painters, artists etc..

Interpersonal Intelligence: The Intelligence is concerned with the capacity to understand the intentions. Motivations and desires of other people. It allows people to work effectively with others. Educators, salespeople, religious and political leaders and counselors all need a well-developed interpersonal intelligence.

Intrapersonal Intelligence: This entails the capacity to understand oneself, to appreciate one’s feelings, fears and motivations. In Howard Gardner’s view it involves having an effective working model of ourselves, and being able to use such information to regulate our lives.

Gardner said from the beginning that there could be additional intelligences worthy of inclusion within the model, and I certainly agree. Notably Gardner discussed Naturalist Intelligence (perception of and relationship with the natural environment) ; Spiritual or Existential Intelligence (as would concern one’s relationship with the universe or God. depending on one’s personal philosophy); and Moral Intelligence (one,s relationship with other living  things and their well-being).

Thus the model is extendable to modern ideas beyond those listed in the seven basic intelligences. As already discussed, defining additional intelligences is not easy. But they do exist,and people do possess capabilities, potential and values far beyond the seven original ‘multiple intelligences’.

Garder knew-as we can now see-that his multiple intelligence theory left some room to grow, however, while so many are still stuck on IQ and the ‘Three R;s (the hackneyed ‘Reading Writing an Arithmetic’ – I ask you – how can so many busy into a framework that has so effortlessly assumed such a ridiculous description?….) The seven intelligences are a bloody good first step towards valuing and developing people in a more compassionate and constructive way.

If first we concentrate on encouraging schools and industry to think beyond  IQ and the bleeding three R’s – then perhaps  soon we’ll be ready for morality and spiritualism.
